Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

P is a middling end letter in Wordle. It features in 56 answers, which places it 12th in the alphabet. Don’t expect it to happen that often compared to the likes of E, Y and T.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1470) is… STUMP.
STUMP is a pleasing word to say, isn’t it? Go on, try it: stump! Versatile, too – as well as the obvious tree-related meaning, to ‘stump’ someone can be to frustrate, which Wordle regularly does when it stumps me.
I wasn’t stumped by today’s game, though, solving it in an adequate four. Adequate rather than impressive, but I had a poor start and got a 93 skill score, so I don’t think I did too much wrong either.
SAVVY was definitely not the optimal opening guess. WordleBot described it as a “bold choice” and said it was “not what I would have picked”; me neither, ‘Bot, but it’s what my random-word generator told me I had to play.
SAVVY did at least give me the S at the start, as well as ruling out the A and Y (and two Vs, but that was less helpful). I now had 242 choices, the ‘Bot said later, but focused purely on playing common letters.
Actually, that’s not entirely true: I focused on playing common letters that pair well with an S, specifically C, L and N, which I assembled into CLONE.
This was a bit unlucky and drew a complete blank – but I had now cut the shortlist to 29.
With eight letters ruled out, including six of the top 10, I was now having to luck further for my inspiration. THUMP included four more letters that regularly go after an S; surely one of these would change color?
Indeed they did: four of them, in fact. What’s more, three went green, meaning that with my already-green S I now knew exactly what the answer had to be. That was of course STUMP, so I scored a rollercoaster four.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1469)
In a different time zone where it’s still Friday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1469, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1469) was… PLAIN.
It’s been a tricky old week in Wordle, with the six games since last Saturday coming in at 4.1, 3.8, 3.9, 4.1, 4.5 and 4.3. Well, this game was rather different.
How different? At the time of writing it has an average score of 3.2 – making it one of the easiest games all year.

As you can see, easy games in general don’t always tally with easy games for me, though.
That’s at least in part because I use a random start word each day, whereas people who use the best Wordle start words – such as CRANE, SLATE and STARE – will have had a direct advantage on most of these.
After all, ‘easy’ games in many cases would better be described as ‘good games to use a popular start word for’. They usually include four or five of the most common letters – generally picked from A, E, S, T, R, L and N – in their most common positions, and with no repeats. They are not always intrinsically simpler to solve, they just align closely with the top opening picks.
CRANE, for instance, left only 12 options, while TRAIN left five. Between them, those openers account for 4% of all Wordlers, which will have brought down the average and made the game seem easier.
That said, this is one of those cases where it should be relatively easy for everyone, regardless of what they started with. PLAIN is a very common word, and will probably have suggested itself as a narrowing-down option early on in the game.
Unfortunately for me, my first guess, NOTCH, was rather less helpful than most and left 200-plus choices. Nor did I get any good fortune with my second, SANER – which the ‘Bot rated at 94 for skill but only 10 for luck.
Still, it did gave me a yellow A to add to the yellow N I already had, and left 17 options on the shortlist. Theoretically, at least – I didn’t know that at the time and didn’t find that many.
I did find enough to known that ALIGN was a good choice, though, because it would have pointed the way to the likes of AGING, AGAIN, ADMIN, BLAND, GLAND and FLANK, plus the eventual answer, PLAIN.
And it did the trick: the L and N turned green, the I turned yellow, and the answer duly had to be PLAIN.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren’t in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
